West Yorkshire Winter League

The club competes in the West Yorkshire Winter League with 15 other local clubs. The league originally started with just eight clubs, but over the years some have drifted away whilst others have joined and now there are 16 clubs in total. Each winter a number of races are planned - each on a Sunday morning - over a distance between 4 and 5½ miles. The conditions are usually (very!) muddy. But everyone who does them has a good time and it’s all about taking part and competing with like minded runners from other local clubs. Occasionally over the years races have had to be postponed, or cancelled, due to extreme weather.

The scoring is based on the first seven men, of which three must be vets (35+), and first five ladies, of which one must be a vet (35+), from each club to finish. You get points according to your finishing position overall. Whilst there is only one race, there is separate scoring for men and ladies.

There is also a separate competition for veterans, known as vets for short (all runners over 35). The vets team is made up of the first two male vets to finish and the first lady vet finisher from each club. In the 2016/2017 season a new separate competition was introduced for super veterans (all runners over 50). The supervets team is made up of the first two male supervets to finish and the first lady supervet finisher from each club.

Whilst you might think that you can’t be one of the first seven Baildon Runners (men) or first five Baildon Runners (ladies) to finish, you might finish before the seventh male, or fifth lady, runner from another club. By doing so, the other club runner gets fewer points and this helps Baildon Runners finish higher in the overall standings. The same principle applies to the vets and supervets competitons. So every club member, whatever their ability, can play their part.

We meet at the Ian Clough car park in the town centre to car share. This allows anyone without their own transport to take an active part in these events. Supporters are also most welcome.
